All Odds Were Against Her

LUCY FLORES graduated from USC with honors, awards and scholarships. Lucy is now studying law at UNLV Law School. Upon admission she was awarded a 75% scholarship.  Life did not start out for Lucy as an achiever though.  Her story is very different regarding her life when she was growing up. Lucy was never able to celebrate her Quinceanera as a Mis Quince Anos or a Sweet 16.

Lucy shared her motivating and inspiring life story with the student body of approximately 780 students at the Muscatel Middle School in Rosemead, California. Every student  sat at the edge of his or her seat listneing to every word Lucy shared with them. The students questons never ending. Lucy was honest not holding back anything.  Some students had tears in their eyes when they returned to their classrooms, because they knew if they make wrong choices in their life, they might not be as lucky as Lucy was.

Picture of Lucy Flores with her father at her USC graduation:

  • Lucy Flores is a second generation Mexican American. She grew up very, very poor.  Her mother abandoned the family when she was only 9 years old. Lucy and her older sister had to take care of their younger  brothers and sisters. Her father had to work three jobs inorder to put food on the table.
  • Her older sister left the family in her early teens. It was too much responsibilty Lucy, she wasn't even a teen herself.
  • Lucy felt alone. She felt she had no one to talk to. No one to listen to her problems. No times for dreams of  being a Quinceanera.
  • Lucy became a runaway after at the age of 12, she started to ditch school.
  • She started with small crimes. Slowly the dark side of her life started to take over.  She joined up with members of a gang. They became her family.
  • She learned how to steal cars, break into houses and steal anything she could.
  • Not surprising - within a short period of time the police picked up Lucy and she was sentenced to a long-term juvenile detention center.
  • 9-months later she was released back into main stream of life.
  • Lucy Flores believes  what saved her from returning to the Juvenile Detention Home was because of her dedicated parole officer. Lucy says, "my parole officer, helped me open my eyes to see the light and start to believe in myself".
  • To this day Lucy says she feels blessed, that her parole officer believed in her and concerned about Lucy's future.  She showed her the best path ♦so Lucy would never return to a juvenile detention center again.
  • Lucy went on to say once she changed her attitude about herself and her life. She opened her heart and started to listen to people who had faith in her. She then began to see that there were big opportunties for her in life. That was when she put her focus to have a plan, a road map in order to put her life in the right direction.
  • Lucy had dropped out of high school, but she decided to get her GED and then it was off to community college and then she transfered to USC.
  • 'It wasn't easy, says Lucy. In fact it was tough, at times I didn't think I would make it.'
  • By now, she had many mentors in her life, people who listened to her and she listened to them. Her plan was to stay focused. Work extra hard for herself and never let the people who believed in her down.
  • Her hard work payed off. When she dropped out of high school her GPA was 1.8. When she transfered to USC from community college her GPA was 3.8.
  • Horay for Lucy...She received a FULL SCHOLARSHIP TO USC.
  • Lucy Flores deserves all the wonderful things in her life,  she has worked very hard for and all the wonderful things she has now and what is coming to her in her future.
  • Lucy's message to every teen is: "There are people out there maybe not necessarily your parents, but your teachers, couselors, professionals and others with good intentions.  All you have to do is ask for help, guidance and be open to recieve the goodness from others. Live in the light not in darkness. You deserve to have all the opportunities out there, but you must also work for it. Make the right choices for yourself and your journey in life does not have to be as difficult as mine was".

Lucy Flores says she has achieved more than she ever imagined she would.

  • I first heard Lucy Flores speak when she received the John R. Hubbard Award at The USC Mexican American Alumni Association Award Dinner.
  • When I heard her speak not onIy did I have tears in my eyes, I had tears in my heart. I was so impressed how Lucy turned her life around, from being a victum to being a winner, I wanted to share her story with every teen.
